It’s officially summer, and another school year is behind us. Spending just an hour or two reflecting on the past school year and regrouping for the next one can help your child start the year more smoothly. We have suggestions:
- Consider your child’s successes and challenges over the year. Make note of the things you’d like to change and those you’ll want the school to continue. Decide whether a meeting will be needed once school starts.
- Gather documents, such as your student’s IEP, 504 Plan, and IEP goal progress reports from last school year. Ensure you also have your child’s latest educational evaluation. Keep all info in a binder, tote bag or electronic folder, so it’s ready for next year.
- Prepare a one-page “about my child” document for the upcoming school year to share with school personnel. Include key information, such as your student’s strengths, motivators, triggers, worries, and calming strategies.
- During your child’s summertime doctor and therapy appointments, discuss the past school year. Ask if there are changes or updates to share with the school nurse, special education teacher, and/or or school therapist.
- If your child struggles with transition, ask the school special education staff if your student can visit the classroom and walk through the school before meet-the-teacher events are held for next year.
- Relax, and enjoy the long summer days!
